University Specialization Diploma in Communication and Religion in the Digital Age

The Blanquerna School of Communication and International Relations is offering the eighth edition of this University Specialization Diploma, endorsed by the Blanquerna Observatory on Media, Religion and Culture. It combines communication, religion and the digital environment, with more than thirty professors specialized in the subject. The aim is to train journalists and institutional managers to be competent in the communication and public image of ecclesiastical and religious entities. It also explores the communicative possibilities offered by the digital environment to transmit the religious and institutional message. The program also addresses the major issues that set the global communication agenda and are of interest to church institutions, such as sustainability, gender, youth and crisis communication.

Main objectives

  • To provide all those interested in the relationship between communication and religion (e.g. journalists, leaders of ecclesiastical and religious institutions, etc.) with the knowledge and criteria to operate and make decisions in the world of communication.
  • To understand the techniques of institutional communication applied to religious entities.
  • To understand the workings of specialized religious journalism.
  • To offer crisis communication tools.

Study plan

Module 1. Communication (2 ECTS)

  1. Media, religion and culture.
  2. Communication in a digital world: multimedia concentration and virtual communities.

Module 2. The global agenda (2 ECTS)

  1. Issues on the global media agenda.
  2. Positioning religion in the discourse on sustainability or gender.

Module 3. Church and religions. Institutions and communication (2 ECTS)

  1. The Catholic Church and communication. The Vatican and the management of religious information.
  2. Religious journalism. Confessional and generalist media.
  3. Christianity and other religions and their relationship with communication.

Module 4. Technologies and religion (4 ECTS)

  1. The terrain of traditional languages in the digital environment.
  2. Social networks and influencers.
  3. Multimedia initiatives in the international Catholic field.
  4. Crisis communication management.

Module 5. Internships (10 ECTS)

Module 6. Final Project (10 ECTS)
