AMINA. Countering Migration Misinformation and Promoting Safe Pathways through Community and Diaspora Action in Nigeria, Niger, and Europe
AMINA is a European research and action project aimed at combating disinformation about irregular migration and promoting safe, informed and voluntary migration decisions among communities in Nigeria, Niger and Europe.
The project is based on a key idea: many migration decisions are shaped by misleading narratives, lack of reliable information and situations of vulnerability, especially for women and young people. In response to this challenge, AMINA will develop a transnational strategy based on research, communication and community work.
Goals of the Project
AMINA will work to:
- Counteract disinformation about irregular migration
- Promote reliable information on safe routes and migration alternatives
- Engage Nigerian diasporas in Europe as awareness-raising agents
- Strengthen the protection and participation of women and girls in migration contexts
- Create replicable models of community communication between countries of origin, transit and destination
Lines of Action
Research and community listening: Mapping migration narratives, perceptions and disinformation dynamics in Nigeria, Niger and European diasporas.
Campaigns and Communication
Development of digital content, storytelling, community theatre and culturally adapted materials to promote informed decision-making.
Diaspora and Peer Educators
Training diaspora communities in Spain, Italy, Austria and Greece as “trusted messengers” to counter misleading narratives about migration.
Help Desks in Lagos and Abuja
Creation of guidance and support points for migrants and returnees.
An Innovative Approach
AMINA is committed to an approach based on human rights, a gender perspective and participatory communication. The project places migrants not only as beneficiaries, but also as key actors in the construction of alternative narratives on mobility, risks and opportunities.
European Consortium
The project brings together six organisations from Italy, Spain, Greece and Austria, including Blanquerna Foundation (Barcelona), in a consortium that combines research, community work, communication and international advocacy. In addition to our organisation, the consortium includes Comunità Papa Giovanni XXIII (Italy), Progettomondo (Italy), Odyssea (Greece), Südwind (Austria) and Condivisione Fra i Popoli (Italy), with the support of the European Union.
