Under the motto “All different, all equal”, this year the Spiritual Cinema Showcase of Catalonia reaches its 22nd edition, which begins tomorrow, November 15, in dozens of theatres across the Catalan territory.
The showcase is an annual film festival that highlights spirituality and makes different religious expressions visible through cinema, inviting audiences to reflect on coexistence and respect for diversity, contributing to interfaith dialogue and social cohesion.
This series is organized by the Religious Affairs Department of the Government of Catalonia, and it involves the collaboration of dozens of organizations, including Blanquerna, which —as in every edition— contributes with engaged Faculty members, offering screenings and discussions, as well as with the participation and involvement of university students.
Among the films featured in this edition, audiences in the many theatres across the territory will be able to see The Miracle Club, Los destellos, Conclave, How to Become a Millionaire Before Grandma Dies, Bonhoeffer, The Holdovers, A Mother from Tokyo, Cabrini, or Arizmendarrieta.
Local productions include the pre-premiere of the series Natura sagrada, by Joan Salicrú, a reflection on spirituality, territory, and natural heritage that connects nature, culture, and transcendence. Another pre-premiere will be Hospital de Campanya, by Jordi Roigé, portraying the solidarity network supporting homeless people at the Basilica of Santa Anna. The documentary Llorenç Gomis, the Serene Teacher will also be screened, as well as the film Solo Javier, which will include a conversation between the directors and the audience.
Also, within the framework of the showcase, the Filmoteca de Catalunya is dedicating a special retrospective to Andrei Tarkovsky, considered one of the great poets of cinema, with titles such as Andrei Rublev and Nostalghia. In his search for inner truth, he explored themes such as memory, childhood, faith, and dreams. The showcase expands, as well, to digital platforms, with an online program on FilminCat, where twenty-six titles will be available.
The festival will close with the pre-premiere of King of Kings, an animated film directed by Seong-ho Jang. It is a loose adaptation of Charles Dickens’ tale that delves into the biblical narrative through the eyes of a child.
