Chair of Religious Freedom and Conscience

Chair’s web

Project supported by the General Directorate for Religious Affairs of the Department of Justice of the Generalitat de Catalunya. It is a research and dissemination space whose main objective is to study and analyse the situation of religious freedom and freedom of conscience in Catalonia, in order to provide citizens with knowledge that allows them to approach the recognition and scope of the fundamental right in the Catalan sphere. In this sense, the recognition and scope of the principle of non-discrimination on religious grounds will also be transferred. The Chair’s team will produce a biennial report analysing the current situation of the protection of FORB (Freedom of Religion and Belief) in Catalonia (with focus groups, interviews, news analysis, legal analysis). A training on religious verification for journalists by Alba Tobella, co-director of the Verificado platform, and an interactive digital map of cases were also carried out.

The I International Congress on Freedom of Religion and Conscience was held in Barcelona on 2nd and 3rd of June. The international meeting was attended by experts from practically all five continents, as well as representatives of different public administrations and religious denominations. Among the topics discussed were the impact of COVID 19 on religious freedom, as well as the exercise of this right in areas such as health, education, young people and the media, municipal management of religious diversity, religious and gender freedom, and interfaith dialogue in Europe. The opening ceremony was attended by the then Minister of Justice, Mrs Lourdes Ciuró, and the then Rector of the Universitat Ramon Llull, Dr Joseph Maria Garrell.

The II Internation Congress on Freedom of Religion and Conscience will take place on the 5th and 6th June, 2024. Further information here.

The Càtedra has developed the BIRF-S (Blanquerna Interfaith Religious Freedom Scale), which measures the degree of social perception of the exercise of the right to religious freedom based on 3 dimensions: 1) degree of openness of the environment, 2) perceived past aggression and 3) perceived security.
