Dr Daniel Esparza, of the Blanquerna Observatory, together with Professor Elaine Wilson of the Jordan Center for the Advanced Study of Russia at New York University, gave a lecture entitled ‘Divine Forces: Saints, Soldiers, and Energy in Eastern Europe‘, as part of the Twentieth International Conference on Technology, Knowledge, and Society held at the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV) on the 7th and 8th of March 2024.

The lecture explored Russian imperial history from the Middle Ages to the present, looking at certain ideologically charged “energies” (military, spiritual and economic). Dr Wilson and Dr Esparza’s work suggests that religious ideology has been and continues to be a dominant source of ‘energy’ in Russian history, and that its development has shaped the country’s imperial project to the present day.
