HERDER EDITORIAL

Herder Editorial is a German publishing house that has been publishing in Spanish since 1887 and in Catalan since 1968. Since the 1960s, they have been publishing at their Barcelona headquarters on Carrer Provença, just a stone’s throw from the Sagrada Família. Gaudí’s temple reminds them of the Christian roots of the publishing house and that love for one’s neighbour could be considered the most important political, social and ethical principle. Herder is a financially and intellectually independent publishing house, which gives them freedom and allows them to move between tradition and progression, between religions and different and opposing schools and lines of thought. Their aim is to connect people and ideas, and they yearn to foster dialogue. In this sense, they see themselves as a ferryman between the two shores.

Bartolomeo Herder founded the publishing house in Germany, and published his first books in 1796, at a time when Europe was illuminated by the ideas and flames of the French Revolution and he was torn between tradition and enlightenment. On the one hand, horrified by the events of the revolution and the successive wars; on the other, remaining true to his revolutionary mission to educate the whole people. Herder believed that the book was the perfect medium for the wide dissemination of knowledge and learning, convinced that books could transform the world.

The publishing house has published thousands of books, distributed throughout history to university and monastery libraries, to private homes and to antiquarian bookshops. Good quality books endure over time, and they believe that human science books written with rigour do not lose their relevance, which is why they remain committed to the quality of the works they publish.

Its publications include books on thought and contemplation, reflection and speculation, education and teaching, aid and training, books on Catholic theology and religion, philosophy, psychology, education and languages; manuals, dictionaries and magazines, as well as manga and graphic books.

They also translate books from German, Italian, French and English, as well as from Czech, Polish, Hungarian, Romanian, Chinese, Japanese, Dutch, Finnish, Danish and Norwegian. They publish authors from Latin America and Spain, and their catalogue includes both academic and popular collections. They are aimed at a wide, interested and restless public, who, like them, believe that a book is very special.

They maintain that the printed book on paper continues to be an unbeatable product, but that it is no longer the only means of dissemination. They also publish e-books and audio books. Whatever the format, they continue to believe that good books have a decisive role to play in society, that they have the potential to change the world, and that is why they are at the service of authors as much as they are at the service of readers, at the service of a good book. ‘Herder are books’.
