On Tuesday December 10th 2024, a significant date because it is Human Rights Day, commemorating the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the UN General Assembly, Observatory member Davide Nocca attended the opening ceremony of the UNESCO Global Forum against Racism and Discrimination.
The Forum was held at the Barcelona International Convention Centre and was organised by the United Nations Organisation for Education, Science and Culture, the Ministry of Equality, the Generalitat of Catalonia and Barcelona City Council.
The opening ceremony was attended by the Mayor of Barcelona, Jaume Collboni; Gabriela Ramos, Deputy Assistant Director-General for Social and Human Sciences at UNESCO; Ana Redondo, Minister for Equality; Salvador Illa, President of the Generalitat of Catalonia; Beatriz Carrillo, Director General for Equal Treatment and Non-Discrimination at the Ministry of Equality; and Wole Soyinka, winner of the 1986 Nobel Prize for Literature.
At this annual Global Forum, a call for decisive action is made. The purpose of this edition is to increase commitments and capitalise on the progress of previous editions. It will also see the emergence of a Global Alliance against Racism and Discrimination, with the aim of fostering a collaborative approach to meaningful and lasting action.
